A Dream Realized: My Experience at the Critic's Choice and Grammy Gifting Suite

When I look back on my journey as a designer and entrepreneur, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences that have shaped my path. One of the most surreal moments occurred earlier this year when I had the opportunity to participate in the Gifting Suite for the combined Critic's Choice Awards and Grammys, hosted by GBK Brand Bar. These two events were initially postponed due to the devastating Palisades fires that swept through Los Angeles in January. However, this delay made the eventual gathering all the more meaningful.

This event took place over a weekend, February 1st and 2nd, at the iconic Beverly Wilshire, a hotel that has earned its place in cinematic and cultural history. Many know it as the setting for the beloved movie Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Originally named the Regent Beverly Wilshire, the hotel was built in 1928 and later became Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, in 1992. Its timeless elegance and storied history provided the perfect backdrop for an occasion dedicated to creativity and artistry.

As I reflect on those fires, I am reminded of the challenges nature can present and how they disrupt even the most prestigious events. It was heart-wrenching to see the impact on local communities and businesses. Yet, despite these setbacks, the spirit of the entertainment and creative industries remained resilient, culminating in this unforgettable event.

At the Gifting Suite, I had the honor of presenting wearable art pieces from my Gold Label Collection. These aren't just fashion items—they are stories, cultural expressions, and representations of beauty through art. Over 50 award nominees and attendees, including musicians and actors, received my designs. Among them was Cyrille Aimée, a celebrated jazz vocalist whose artistry inspires me. Seeing such talented creatives appreciate my work affirmed the importance of staying true to my vision.

One particularly delightful moment was meeting Christian Isaiah, the child actor who portrayed Liam Gallagher on the hit Netflix series Shameless. Seeing him now as a young man was both heartwarming and surreal. We sometimes forget that child actors grow up just like everyone else—they don’t stay children forever. Meeting him reminded me of the passage of time and how much growth and transformation we all experience in our journeys.

Another highlight was meeting members of New Edition, including Ricky Bell and Johnny Gill. Seeing them brought back a flood of memories from my youth, growing up in the '80s and '90s. Their music was the soundtrack of my formative years, and it’s from that period that much of my personal style and creative essence developed. Meeting these legends, who have influenced both music and culture, was an emotional and inspiring experience. Their presence reminded me of how deeply art and music shape not only our identity but also the way we express ourselves through fashion.

One of the most exciting and memorable moments was meeting Jackie Tohn, an actress who has long been a favorite of mine. I’ve admired her work since watching her in the Netflix series Nobody Wants This. To my surprise and delight, Jackie selected one of my tops called 'Twin Cherubs in Ebony,' featuring Black twin angels—a design created in honor of Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. This top is part of my latest collection, 'Straight to the Heart – Cherubs & Angels,' which can be found at Straight to the Heart Collection. Having someone I admire resonate with such a meaningful piece of my art was incredibly rewarding.

Another heartwarming and unexpected encounter came when I met my youngest fan: Hugo, an 8-year-old boy who was volunteering with his parents for Americares. Americares was on-site handing out emergency kits and gathering celebrity support. Although I don’t typically design clothes for children, I was told by one of the volunteers how much this young boy admired my work (he had visited my booth a few times). He was especially drawn to my designs, and after hearing his enthusiasm, I gifted him one of my tops. Little did I know how perfect the choice would be—it was the 'Sphinx of the New Realm,' an abstract graffiti print featuring a cat motif. As it turns out, he absolutely loves cats! Seeing his excitement and knowing that my art could bring joy to someone so young filled me with immense pride and gratitude.

But what truly brought me to tears was meeting two powerhouse Black actresses: Angela Bassett and Viola Davis. These women have been icons of strength, beauty, and grace for generations. As a Black woman and designer, meeting them was like a dream come true. Angela and Viola have broken barriers and told stories that reflect the experiences of so many of us. To stand in their presence and share my work felt like a full-circle moment—proof that representation and perseverance matter.

The experience also allowed me to connect with other talented individuals who are shaping today’s cultural landscape. Designers, artists, and influencers all gathered in one space to celebrate creativity, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. It was a reminder that success is built not just on individual effort, but on community, support, and shared dreams.

Handing out my Gold Label Collection pieces wasn’t just about exposure for my brand. It was about sharing a piece of my soul—each top a blend of vibrant colors, bold patterns, and cultural motifs designed to spark conversations. Fashion, for me, is a form of art that speaks to our identities and our stories. It was thrilling to see people recognize and appreciate that message.

Despite the chaos and uncertainty caused by the fires, the combined Critic’s Choice and Grammy event became a powerful moment of celebration and unity. I left the suite inspired, motivated, and deeply humbled. These opportunities remind me why I do what I do. As I continue to grow my brand, I hold onto these experiences as both milestones and motivators.

For anyone navigating their own creative journey: keep going. The path is full of challenges, but moments like these make it all worthwhile. Dreams do come true—you just have to keep showing up for them.
