Switch Me Black in Pinstripe: A Bold Ode to the Black Dandy and Janelle Monáe’s 2025 Met Gala Look
When Janelle Monáe stepped onto the 2025 Met Gala carpet in a jaw-dropping red, black, and white ensemble, the world stopped to take notice—and so did I. The theme, The Black Dandy, was a tribute to the flamboyant, fashion-forward, and revolutionary aesthetic rooted in Black resistance and expression. Janelle’s look was more than a fashion statement—it was a theatrical nod to history, artistry, and power.
Inspired by her look and the deeper cultural meaning behind it, I designed the Switch Me Black in Pinstripe wide-leg pants.
This design is a modern remix of tradition and swagger. Vertical black-and-white pinstripes meet bold red panels, accented with faux red patch pockets outlined in gold—strategically placed only on one leg to add a playful, asymmetrical twist. These pants aren’t just an eye-catcher—they’re an homage. With every stitch, they carry the spirit of the Black Dandy: confident, intelligent, audacious, and intentional.
Historically, the Black Dandy emerged as a rebellion against stereotypes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Black men used European fashion to subvert expectations and reclaim identity. Despite the constraints of racism and classism, they wore tailored coats, silk cravats, and polished shoes with pride. It was political. It was personal. It was style as resistance.
In today’s cultural landscape, this legacy lives on through artists like Janelle Monáe—who twist tradition, challenge gender norms, and remind us that Blackness contains multitudes. Her Met Gala appearance, with structured silhouettes and precise asymmetry, exemplified the sharp playfulness that defines modern Black Dandyism.
The Switch Me Black in Pinstripe collection now includes more than just the wide-leg pants—it’s a full tribute capsule. Two cropped pullovers offer a bold way to mix and match: one in dynamic red and black pinstripes with a single faux pocket detail, and another in an abstract swirl of red, beige, and black with double faux patch pockets and striped sleeves. The matching cargo joggers—bursting with oversized shapes, checkerboard trim, stripes, dots, and graphic curves—complete the vision, turning each piece into wearable, walkable art. These joggers are stamped with the “STL” initials and packed with movement and momentum, ready to be styled your way.
Just added to the lineup is a stunning pocketed long maxi skirt. This piece features the same vibrant visual language—pinstripes, checkerboard contrasts, and Afrocentric motifs—in a sleek, body-skimming silhouette. With a drawstring waistband and practical side pockets, it offers the perfect balance of comfort and edge. Whether paired with sneakers or boots, this skirt lets you stride in style with purpose.
All five pieces are made from midweight, breathable, wrinkle-resistant eco-poly athletic wear fabric designed for ease and motion. Whether you're layering for impact or keeping it casual, this collection brings gallery-worthy design to everyday life. It’s for the rebels, the tastemakers, the culture-shifters—and anyone who wants their wardrobe to speak volumes before they do.
At SingleTree Lane, I believe in making pieces that carry meaning. Switch Me Black in Pinstripe isn’t just a fashion collection—it’s a celebration of Black creativity, historical elegance, and unapologetic individuality. This capsule is also deeply personal—a nod to my own heritage and the cultural influences that shaped me. With every stripe, swirl, and stitch, this collection reflects not only the spirit of The Black Dandy, but also the rhythm of my own roots. It’s for those who lead with style and aren’t afraid to make the sidewalk their runway.
